Gaiters fit in any luggage, weigh just a few grams and provide extra comfort on outdoor adventures in adverse conditions. Whether for hiking, trekking or mountaineering, on glacier tours, skiing or snowshoeing – gaiters provide reliable protection against moisture, snow, dirt and scratches.
If you have to expect bad weather, mud or even snow on your tours, outdoor gaiters are the right companion. Trousers and shoes stay comfortably dry and are protected from coarse dirt. If you are out and about in rough terrain with undergrowth or sharp rock edges, your gaiters will protect you from scratches and similar injuries. The hiking trousers also remain intact and do not tear. This is an important advantage on demanding tours, such as on a glacier. They protect your shoes and pants from the sharp points of the crampons.
Another side effect: if you are hiking in a tick area, outdoor gaiters keep the arachnids at bay and you avoid catching Lyme disease or TBE on your hike.
Thanks to their small pack size, they are quick and easy to stow in your rucksack and can be put on in seconds if necessary.
Before buying, you should think about the intended use. Do you need long gaiters up to the knee so that you can trudge through the deep snow in comfort? Or will short gaiters that reach up to about the calf suffice?
So that you don’t have to fiddle around on the go, take a good look at how the gaiters are fastened before you buy them. At Tatonka, we use zippers instead of hook and loop fasteners. This means the gaiters sit much better on the leg and don’t slip. They also fit snugly at the top and bottom so that snow, dirt and insects don’t stand a chance. All Tatonka gaiters have a shoe loop and a hook for attaching to the shoe laces. The long gaiters can also be fastened at the top with a drawstring.
No matter what you are planning, the material should definitely be waterproof. Are the gaiters robust enough? At Tatonka we use different materials:
All fabrics are treated with a PFC/PFAS-free, dirt and water-repellent impregnation.

Tatonka gaiters are produced fairly in our own SA8000-certified production facilities. You can also see the high social standards for yourself through our Open Factory program: every Friday you can visit our Mountech Co. Ltd. factory in Ho Chi Minh City while production is running.
Our supply chain is also transparent: with our online tool Traceability by Tatonka, you can track the path of your purchased Tatonka product from material purchase to delivery.
Gaiters are an extremely useful outdoor accessory that you should definitely include in your equipment list.
