Depending on the destination and duration of your trip, it may not always be possible, but if it is, flying with a hand luggage backpack is really fun. Apart from the fact that you don’t have to lug around a large trolley or backpack, it’s also a lot quicker at the airport. If you have already checked in online at home, you can go straight to the security checkpoint and when you arrive at your destination, you can simply walk out of the airport – without the hassle of waiting at the baggage carousel.
A carry-on luggage or backpack is a travel backpack that has a volume of between 25 and 40 liters and whose maximum dimensions roughly correspond to the recommendations of the International Air Transport Association (IATA): 56 x 45 x 25 cm. You do not have to check in a carry-on backpack as baggage, but can take it into the cabin with you.
Hand luggage backpacks, for example our Flightcase 27 or our Flightcase, have a main compartment that can be opened completely for easy packing, and they have a laptop compartment that can be accessed separately from the outside as well as other organizational compartments on the outside. A coverable carrying system is practical because the shoulder straps cannot get tangled up anywhere in the luggage rack.
One annoying topic should not be concealed: There are no standardized regulations regarding the size and weight of permitted hand luggage. As already mentioned, the IATA dimensions mentioned above are merely recommendations to which the airlines do not feel bound.
However, while many scheduled flights still have very generous regulations and the permitted dimensions usually only deviate from the IATA dimensions by a few centimetres, low-cost airlines have tightened their carry-on baggage regulations and now charge additional fees for larger carry-on backpacks.
You should therefore check the conditions that apply to your flight before you travel and measure and weigh your hand luggage backpack. You can also consider whether the travel comfort is worth paying additional fees – the airlines usually disclose their scale of fees. Otherwise, it’s worth asking to avoid unpleasant surprises at the airport.
In our blog post, we have compiled a list of how big and heavy your hand luggage backpack can be on various airlines and what you are allowed to pack (and above all, what you are not allowed to pack).
