As the physique of men and women differs, there are special versions for women in addition to unisex backpack models. Compared to men, women are usually smaller, have a narrower waist, a shorter back, a wider pelvis and have more feminine curves. These differences are reflected in the fit of Tatonka’s women’s backpacks.
Basically, the differences between women’s backpacks and gender-neutral models increase with the size of the backpack. The larger the backpack, the more pronounced the gender-specific characteristics. While only the shoulder straps of women’s hiking backpacks are shaped differently, the difference in women’s trekking backpacks or women’s touring backpacks is more extensive:
In order to accommodate the female anatomy, a large-volume outdoor backpack for women is characterized by a narrower and shorter back section. In general, the back length of the rucksack should match the height of the wearer. In Tatonka backpacks with a larger capacity, the height of the shoulder straps can be individually adjusted using the ladder system. To adjust the carrying system optimally, the padded hip belt must be centered on the hip bone. This transfers part of the load from the shoulders to the pelvic area and relieves pressure on the back.
In addition, the women’s backpack should not protrude at the sides so as not to restrict the wearer’s freedom of movement and become a hindrance. The shorter and narrower fit results in a smaller pack volume, which goes hand in hand with the recommended pack load for different body sizes.
The shape of the shoulder straps on all Tatonka women’s rucksacks has also been adapted: In order to pass the chest and at the same time not rub against the arms, they are narrower and more curved. During a tour, it is advisable to fasten them by closing the chest strap to ensure a secure hold. As the chest strap should be positioned above the chest, it can be flexibly adjusted on all Tatonka women’s backpacks.
However, a special ladies’ model is not the right choice for every woman. After all, not all women have the same physique. Depending on how tall or athletic you are, a unisex model may be more suitable for you. Conversely, a women’s backpack may be the ideal companion for slim men with a shorter back. So don’t let the name put you off.

All Tatonka backpacks are made from abrasion-resistant, robust and durable materials – after all, you want your backpack to give you pleasure for a long time. Tear-resistant polyester and polyamide fabrics are used, which are waterproof thanks to a multiple polyurethane coating on the inside of the fabric. All processed fabrics are impregnated to repel dirt and water; this impregnation is PFC/PFAS-free.
Please note, however, that although the fabrics are waterproof, water can penetrate the backpack seams and zippers. For this reason, our hiking, touring and trekking backpacks for women are also equipped with a rain cover. And for all other backpacks, you can find a rain cover in the right size in our backpack accessories.
