        Choosing the right tent

Camping in every season – How to make your tent more comfortable

When choosing a tent, consider how many people it needs to accommodate, the activities you plan to use it for, and the regions where it will be used. These factors determine the tent’s size, shape, material, weight, and packed size.

You should ask yourself the following questions:

        1. What do I mainly want to use the tent for?
        2. How many people should the tent accommodate?
        3. How much luggage or gear do I want to store in the tent?
        4. In which regions do I plan to use the tent primarily (mountainous regions, flatlands, regions with unpredictable weather, dry and warm regions)?
        5. During which seasons do I plan to use the tent primarily (exclusively in summer or also in winter)?

The more precisely you can answer these questions, the happier you’ll be with your choice of tent.

Tip: If you have the chance, it’s worth checking out different tents in person. Often, that’s the only way to get a clear idea of their size and features. You can also step inside the tent, lie down to test it out, and have someone show you the details and how to set it up.

Tatonka Expert Tents for trekking and bikepacking

If you want to take your tent on a trekking or bikepacking trip, you’ll usually choose a one- or two-person tent. It should be as light as possible and, above all, pack down small. The Tatonka tents in the Expert and Expert Light lines offer an excellent balance between weight, durability, and a compact pack size. These tunnel tents can withstand harsh conditions such as strong winds or heavy rain. They are also easy to set up, as the inner and outer tents are connected. Depending on the model, they feature one or two vestibules for gear. The Okisba and the Polar 3 also feature outer tent vents that can be closed from the inside, making them suitable for winter trekking as well.

Allround Tents from Tatonka for backpacking and campgrounds

In our Allround series, you’ll find tunnel tents in a wide range of sizes—from one-person to four-person models. They aren’t as lightweight as the tents in our Expert series, but they’re still light enough for many uses. For example, they work well on paddling trips or bike tours with a trailer, and the one- or two-person tents are also perfectly suited for trekking trips. Of course, all tents in the All-Round series are also ideal for camping vacations.
